Abbreviation: Ara
Genitive: Arae
Right Ascension: 17.39 hours
Declination: -53.58 degrees
Ara, the Altar is visible in Southern Latitudes (from 22 degrees South) and Northern Latitudes ( to 43 degrees North) from November - January.

Ara has existed in one form or another since the Babylonians, the constellation has appeared in different parts of the sky over time, it is generally thought to be an altar where incense was burned in sacrifice to Jove (or Zeus), it as modern day connections as well, such as the altar upon which Noah sacrificed to God after the Great Flood, and to Moses, who erected an altar to sacrifice his son Isaac to God.

To the Babylonians it was the altar which celebrated the construction of the Tower of Babel, and to the Romans as the altar where incense was burned before the dead.

Today Ara, refers to the incense burner and is generally drawn as such.
